Stumbling Stone Research
Perform Your Own
You are welcome to perform your own research on a stumbling stone. Considerable research has already been undertaken and will often provide you with, at the very least, a starting point.
What took place where you live? In your street, your town, your area? Who lived there originally? What became of them?
Where do you start? How do you find out?
Start reading – here’s a good place to start: https://australianfrontierconflicts.com.au/resources/bibliography/
Many books can be downloaded without charge. See for example
Raymond Evans, Race Relations in Colonial Queensland
Look here – Colonial frontiers massacres map https://c21ch.newcastle.edu.au/colonialmassacres/map.php (be mindful of the definitions used by the authors).
Talk to Elders and community in your area. On what peoples’ traditional country do you live? Who lived/lives in your area?
See the How to Request a Stumbling Stone FAQ for next steps.
Stumbling Stone Research Done for You:
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Associates Available to Help
If you would like research help or advice please contact us.
We have a growing number of academic and non-academic Research Associates – Indigenous and non-Indigenous – available to help you with your research. Some have decades of experience working in and with various, state, national and international archives and many are published authors in this field of study.
Research costs (if or when quoted) are charged at the discretion of the individual Research Associate and are not determined nor managed by the AIHGS. Negotiations regarding any fees are undertaken between you and the individual Research Associate you are consulting for help. If you are seeking a Research Associate to assist you, please email research@aihgs.org with details regarding your request and we will put you in contact with a researcher.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Associates Wanted
One of our organisational objectives is to train Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researchers in the use of the archives and other historical sources relevant to the Stumbling Stone project and to include Indigenous oral history, (where and if possible) presented with written documentation and/or photographs/video. If you are interested in being involved, especially as a representative of your people, please contact us.
