Dr Ray Kerkhove presents this fascinating course based on the research he has undertaken for his recently published work How They Fought. Dr Kerkhove explores Indigenous organisation, strategies, tactics, weaponry and defences during Australia’s Frontier Wars.

Outcomes

Students will learn:

  • How Aboriginal people allied with each other in efforts to resist ‘settlement’.
  • About various Aboriginal weapons, tactics and resistance strategies.
  • Details about a number of major battles and skirmishes won by Aboriginal people in Queensland.
  • Of contemporary artworks – sketches, paintings depicting skirmishes on the frontier.
  • Of a number of Aboriginal warriors including Old Moppy, Dundalli and Bussamarai.

The Frontier Wars course comprises 5 lectures entitled:

  • The Frontier Wars: A General Introduction
  • Aboriginal Warfare: How They Fought
  • The Art of Frontier War: Remnants, Relics and Memorialisation
  • Queensland Frontier Wars
  • Frontier Wars and the Toowoomba Region

Intended audience

The Frontier Wars course is intended for students of all ages over the age of 16 years:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that the course contains words and descriptions by non-Indigenous persons of the past that may be confronting and inappropriate today.
  • The course contains the names and images of deceased persons, and graphic descriptions of historical events that may be disturbing to some listeners/viewers.

There are no prerequisites for this course.
